Gary-Marks-2024

Hi, I’m Gary Marks.

I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon by parents who taught me that the most important things I could accomplish in life were to love my family, serve others and to make a difference in the world. That’s why I chose a career as a city manager/administrator and most recently as a public works director. It has been a career that has allowed me to help build communities, bring people together to envision their best future as a community and then to help them realize those visions.

Over the past 30 years I have served communities in Oregon, Montana and Idaho. What I cherish most about those experiences are the many friends I made along the way. With each community I have served, my love for the ideals of “community” have become deeper and stronger.

I am most proud of the positive impacts I have made on the people I have worked with. The following is a collection of messages given to me by staff members, elected officials and community members in the form of notes, cards and letters.

About Gary

I am married to Theresa, my best friend and partner in life. I am also the father of five adult kids of whom I am immensely proud. In 2019, I lost my beloved father due to issues of aging and in 2020, I was devastated to lose my precious wife of 37 years and the mother of my children, LaurieAnn, to cancer.

While dealing with my grief, I met Theresa who had just lost her long-time husband to illness. As we supported each other in our grief we also began to share life together. Our bonds of love grew quickly and we married in June, 2021.

Losing LaurieAnn and my father, then finding new love with Theresa in the span of only two years impacted me deeply. These events have reminded me how important it is to cherish the people with whom we share our lives, whether in our families, on the job or in the communities we belong. Caring about people is what matters most to me.
